Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo is one of the most prolific fashion designers of all time. In addition to her Comme des Garçons collections, she has also collaborated on numerous sneaker projects over the years. One of the most prominent of these collaborations has been the different iterations of her work modifying and styling the Converse Chuck Taylor with her sub-brand, Comme des Garçons PLAY. Kawakubo's initial iteration of the Converse Chuck Taylors came in 2009 when she modified the original by retrieving its contrast stitching. Six years later, in 2015, she took the All Star Chuck 70s as a template and created a shoe that was so well-loved that it has been re-released every year since.
The first thing that stands out about the shoes in the Comme des Garçons PLAY line is the heart-and-eyes logo, originally designed and created by Filip Pagowski. However, unlike the original 2009 version, the 2015 version and every subsequent version moved away from the original minimalist philosophy that inspired Kawakubo to launch these collaborations. The Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star 70s Hi Comme des Garçons PLAY returns to the classic 70s Chuck Taylor style, with its high-cut collar that tightly hugs the ankles, and its black upper, white laces, white sole, and toe.
